Jaws in Concert @ The Hollywood Bowl. July 20-21
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The Hollywood Bowl continues its popular series projecting classic films on their huge screen accompanied by a live orchestra playing the film's iconic score.
This past weekend, the original blockbuster "Jaws" got the concert treatment as the L.A. Philharmonic led by composer David Newman ("Heathers") played one of John William's most famous scores as the film illuminated the Bowl's many screens.
It might seem like an unusual choice: go see a classic film in an outdoor venue for a ticket price that can triple or quadruple the price of a standard movie ticket. But there is a warm and giddy camaraderie that brings almost 17,000 people together to relish in a favorite film with a one-of-a-kind live performance as the movie plays. People wear their fan-favorite best to celebrate the evening. There were thousands of "Jaws" t-shirts (both of the film and clever send-ups of it) as well as people in shark slippers and shark fin hats.
The audience itself consisted of parents bringing their young kids who probably had never seen the film to older folks that were reacting as if they had never seen a thriller before in their life. (Always amusing.)
The film's projection always looks spectacular on the main screen as well as the side screens, and there were English subtitles for those that might not be able to understand the dialogue very clearly.
Coming up, the Bowl will give the same treatment to Blake Edwards "The Pink Panther" and the best of George Lucas' "Star Wars" films, "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back."
L.A. loves to do an outdoor movie, but no one does it better than the Hollywood Bowl.
"Jaws in Concert" played July 20 & 21 at the Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles. For upcoming events at the Bowl visit www.hollywoodbowl.com.
