Watch: First Male NFL Cheerleader Makes Debut for New Orleans Saints
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
The NFL welcomed its first male cheerleader Friday night when Jesse Hernandez performed for the New Orleans Saints' Saintsations team, NOLA.com reports.
Hernandez, 25, is one of three male cheerleaders joining the NFL this season.
The preseason game was between the Saints and the Arizona Cardinals where Hernandez, wearing a white jersey and skinny black jeans, shined among the all-female dance squad. NOLA.com describes the team's routine:
"When the troupe lined up across the field Rockettes-style Hernandez was positioned at the 50 yard line atop the Mercedes-Benz Superdome fleur-de-lis. Instead of pompoms, he waved a small white second-line-style towel."
..."By the third quarter the booming Saints announcer had not called particular attention to the crucial change in the 2018 Saintsations. As Hernandez marched along the sideline passing close to the crowd with the rest of the dancers, fans seemed to cry out, but it was unclear if they cheered for Jesse particularly or for all the glittering black and gold cheerleaders. A new normal seemed to have immediately dawned."
The newspaper goes on to say that the crowd didn't seem to notice the historic moment. One woman commented: "If he can dance and perform, I don't care." Another fan sitting next to her added, "I think it's awesome."
In March the Los Angeles Rams announced it was adding two male cheerleaders to its dance squad. A month later, the Saints revealed Hernandez joined the New Orleans football team.
