Family Guy - Season 16
Karin McKie READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Seth MacFarlane's animation domination workhorse "Family Guy" offers 20 episodes of the 2017/18 season in a DVD set with misanthropic, football-headed talking baby Stewie riding a unicorn on the cover.
The bittersweet 16th season features the last performances of longtime collaborators Carrie Fisher as Peter's boss and Adam West as Quahog's hapless mayor, in addition to the series' 300th episode, titled "Dog Bites Bear."
"Three Directors" offers a trio of takes on patriarch Peter being fired from Pawtucket Brewery (the episode is also an animatic in the DVD extras). Quentin Tarantino's take borrows from all volumes of "Kill Bill" and "Pulp Fiction," and reminds viewers that "opera music makes violence classy."
Wes Anderson's version evokes "eating a pot brownie and waking up in a greeting card." The parallels are accurate: Sailing on the SS Pretentious and a requirement to show Bill Murray, as "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Royal Tenenbaums," and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" are skewered. The segment ends with, "Thanks for watching, white people."
Ripped bros, cheesy taglines, Tokyo drifting, Transformers, and explosions populate the Michael Bay homage.
"Emmy-Winning Episode" trots out MacFarlane's tired trope of "Why aren't we more recognized," and features many of the seasons' guest stars. The "Modern Family Guy" piece hosts Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, and a real-world Ty Burrell. "The Big Bang Theory," "Breaking Bad," "Cheers," and "Girls" are also referenced, as well as a rogue's gallery of #MeToo men like Louis C.K., Jeffrey Tambor from "Transparent," and Kevin Spacey from "House of Cards."
Ian McKellen, Danny Trejo and Kristen Bell also guest-voice in the comfortable, if increasingly tiresome, series.
