Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Next Gen' Collector's Edition

Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.

We all knew Scream Factory wasn't going to get Renee Zellweger or Matthew McConaughey to take the time out to do commentary or an interview for this little gem, but man, you'd think age would give them a sense of humor. They'd probably have a blast.

Buried for three years before it finally got a release (likely because McConaughey and Zellweger were suddenly movie stars) "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" is sort of a little misunderstood gem. For horror fans who tried to take it seriously, they're going to hate it. For horror fans that understand there's a time and place to place tongue firmly in cheek when continuing a silly franchise's mythology, you might very well love it.

In many ways this is a remake of the original with some weird twists thrown in; mostly, that the whole thing is so gloriously over-the-top that you can't possibly take it seriously. Between Zellweger's hilarious and endless escape through the house, to one of the redneck family's skirt-wearing businesswoman who half-heartedly whaps a terrified Zellweger with a branch, nothing about this movie is to be taken seriously. Leatherface is a cross-dresser for Godsakes!

McConaughey is gloriously over the top, and Zellweger plays it so straight she just adds to the nuttiness. I saw this film in theatres and had a blast. If you don't expect a knock down drag out horror slasher, you'll probably find this an amusing treat.

Special Features are okay with two cuts of the film (there's not much difference), the trailer, Audio Commentary with Director Kim Henkel (Director's Cut only) and some featurettes:

The Buzz Is Back– An interview with Director of Photography Levie Isaacks, who, we find out, worked on the original film.

Marked For Death – An interview with actor Tyler Shea Cone who is very serious about his part in the film.

If Looks Could Kill - An interview with makeup artist J.M. Logan and production designer Deborah Pastor who both pretty much know the movie is a big goof and admit it was fun, but not so pleasant to work on.
