Watch: Mass. Middle School Coach Put on Leave for Allegedly Recording Student in Bathroom
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
A teacher and baseball coach at a middle school in Bellingham, Mass. is being put on administrative leave after being accused of recording a male student in a facility bathroom, Boston's ABC-affiliate news station WCVB reports.
Police said a 14-year-old student at Bellingham Memorial Middle School told an administrator last week that the unnamed 35-year-old coach told him to use the faculty bathroom. There, the boy found a box with a hole and a cellphone recording inside.
Authorities found the box in another room at the school and police say they are processing the coach's phone.
"It appears that it was in some type of box that was cut up," Bellingham police Lt. Kevin Ranieri told Boston's NBC-affiliate station WHDH.
The student told police the coach let him us the bathroom, located in the back of the school.
"The faculty member had asked if he wanted to use that one instead of the one that was down the hall," Ranieri added. "It's sad. I mean, we all have kids and grandkids. Hopefully, this isn't true. If it is, charges will come forward."
School officials said the coach, who has worked at the school for 14 years, was removed from the school on Nov. 9 and was placed on administrative leave.
"This individual was immediately removed from the classroom when the district learned of the alleged conduct and we immediately contacted the police," Superintendent Peter Marano said in a statement. "We continue to remain committed to our efforts to ensure a safe learning environment for all students."
The coach has not been charged and the investigation is ongoing.
