Watch: Gay NYC Couple Says Uber Driver Used Slurs Over Kiss, Drove Off & Dragged Man

A newlywed gay couple from New York City say their Uber driver used gay slurs after the pair kissed on Wednesday. Making matters worse, the car allegedly drove off while one of the men exited the car, dragging him on the ground and leaving him with several nasty cuts, according to The New York Post.

Taray Carey told the newspaper that he, his husband Alex Majkowski and a friend were headed to a bar near the couple's home when the trio ordered the Uber around 1:50 a.m. Toward the end of the ride, Carey, 27, and Majkowski, 33, kissed in the backseat of the Toyota Camry.

"Are you fags?" the driver asked, according to Carey, adding that he was shocked what he heard and even asked the driver to repeat what he said.

"Are you faggots? Are you faggots?" the driver allegedly asked again. "In my country you'd be beheaded for that."

He added that he's from Russia, according to The New York Post. Carey took a screenshot of the driver's Uber profile, where he's only identified as "Denis."

Carey added that he then "started driving like a moron."

"His hatred of gays was beyond his self-preservation," he told the newspaper.

Carey told NBC New York that he asked the driver to let him out several times.

When the car stopped at a red light, the couple's friend got out of the car. Carey tried to do the same but as he was halfway out the door he realized he was stuck on the seatbelt and the driver allegedly drove.

Carey said he was dragged about a quarter of a block. He said he suffered scrapes on his hand and knee as well as a "golf ball"-sized welt on the back of his head.

Majkowski, who married Carey a month ago, was still inside the car but got out safely when the car stopped at the next red light.

"If I had caught up to that car with my husband in the back, I'd be the one in jail," Carey told The New York Post. "I'm not used to feeling so defenseless."

Carey also alleges the New York Police Department was not any help, claiming officers "laughed," adding that one cop allegedly said, "You probably deserved it."

The NYPD released a statement to The New York Post, saying that body camera footage contradicts Carey's allegations.

"After reviewing body camera video from the responding Police Officers, at no time did any of the officers mock the victim, tell him that he probably deserved it or laugh at him," the statement said. "A complaint report was filed for leaving the scene of an accident with injury and is being investigated by the 9th Precinct Detective Squad."

NBC New York reports the police report labeled the incident as a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident.

A spokesperson for Uber refunded Carey his $17.46 and said they were looking into the incident.

"What's been reported is very concerning to us," the statement to the newspaper said. "Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination. The driver's access to the app has been removed as we continue to investigate."

The New York Post reports a spokeswoman for New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission, which regulates all for-hire vehicles on New York's streets, including Uber, said the commission is investigating the matter.

"We reached out to the passenger to see if he will speak to the TLC's prosecutors about what happened so we can thoroughly investigate," the agency said.
