'Queer as Folk' is Getting the Reboot Treatment
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
"Queer as Folk" is the latest TV show of yesteryear to get the reboot treatment.
Variety is reporting that Bravo will be developing a new version of the seminal queer drama and that Russell T. Davies, the creator of the original series that aired in the U.K., will serve as executive producer on the new project. Stephen Dunn ("Closet Monster") will write and direct the new "Queer as Folk" and also serve as an executive producer.
Variety called Bravo's announcement of the reboot "a competitive situation."
Starring Aidan Gillen, Charlie Hunnam, and Craig Kelly, the U.K. version of "Queer as Folk" followed the lives of three gay best friends and ran for 10 episodes between 1999 and 2000. The North American remake aired in 2000 on the Canadian network Showcase and the American network Showtime. Set in Pittsburgh, that version was also about the lives of gay best friends and ran for five seasons. The American series starred Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Hal Sparks, Peter Paige, and Scott Lowell.
Variety reports Bravo's version of "Queer as Folk" will have an entirely new cast and characters. It will also be in a new setting.
"It is described as a modern take on the original British series that centers on a group of club-going friends who find support in the gay community following a tragedy," the publication writes.
Variety did not report when Bravo will air its new take on "Queer as Folk."
