Watch: 'Empire' Star Jussie Smollett Will Talk About Attack with Robin Roberts
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"Empire" star Jussie Smollett will appear on "Good Morning America" Thursday to talk with Robin Roberts about being the victim of a possible anti-gay hate crime.
It's the first interview the openly gay actor/singer is giving since making headlines when it was reported he was attacked in downtown Chicago. Police are currently investigating the incident.
A 15-second clip released by ABC News features a voiceover saying Smollett will share his story of "being the victim of a vicious hate crime."
"What happened that night?" Roberts asks Smollett.
Later on in the clip, she asks, "At any point during the attack did you fear for your life?"
The video shows Smollett about to cry.
The "Empire" star reported that he was attacked in downtown Chicago in the early morning of Jan. 29. Police have yet to make any arrests and said they found no surveillance video of the attack. They did, however, release footage of two people who were in the area at the time and said they are persons of interest.
Smollett said the attackers doused him with an unknown chemical substance, hurled gay slurs at him before putting a thin rope tied like a noose around his neck. He told detectives the attackers ran way and yelled "This is MAGA country," referring to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.
"Jussie is the victim here, which has been stated by the Superintendent of Police," a statement from police said. "Jussie has voluntarily provided his phone records from within an hour of the attack and given multiple statements to police."
The latest back-and-forth between Smollett and the Chicago police is over the his phone. The actor apparently redacted some information from his phone before handing it over to authorities in order to protect the privacy of contacts and people not relevant to the attack. Police said the heavily redacted phone records were insufficient for a criminal investigation, however.
