Watch: Florida Spa to Gay Men: No Couples Massage for You!
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 3 MIN.
A gay pair in Florida arranged for a couples massage at a spa and pre-paid online, only to be told once they got there that they could not have their massages because they were both males, reported local NBC affiliate Channel 2.
In cell phone video recorded by Michael Garcia and his boyfriend, the manager of Joy Feet Spa tells the men that a "couple's massage" is "a man and a woman."
"Two men is a bigger price," the manager adds.
"We paid for a couple's massage," one of the men can be heard reiterating on the video.
The men promise to post the video at social media and "report this" as the video continues. The video subsequently went viral, the report said, and prompted critical responses on social media.
Garcia told the media that he was "in shock" at being turned away by the manager.
"I was like, 'Why?' " Garcia was quoted as saying. "He was like, 'Cause it's female and male,' and he just kept pointing to a poster on the wall for couples massages. You hear stories and stuff, but here where I live in Naples, Florida? I would've never thought that would happen."
Garcia took his complaint to Yelp!, posting:
My boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to have a relaxing Monday. So we Prepaid $109 and booked a couples massage at "joy feet spa" on pine ridge road. When we arrived the manager refused to service us because we are two gay men. He made it clear it had to be a man and a woman. Even after we told him we already paid he still denied us the couples massage. Today my humanity has been tested.

The manager was identified by Channel 2 as a man named Jerry Liu. He went on Facebook, too, in order to offer an apology.
"I apologize," the article quoted Liu. "It's my fault." Liu went on to say that, coming from China, he understood "couple" to mean two people of different genders. He added that now he's come to understand that a couple could also be two men or two women.
Liu posted at the spa's Facebook page, "I didn't mean discriminate any gay or lesbian. I respect anyone who finds the true love and also I hope they will love each other forever whatever they are both men or woman. I NEVER EVER discriminate ANY gay or lesbian!"
In a subsequent post, Liu added, "Michael! I would say sorry to you and your boy friend. I miss understand the couple means. Could I do something to make up? I will give you and your boy friend one your massage for free to say SORRY!"
Garcia did not take Liu up on the offer, and commented, "Treat everybody equally–black, white, gay, straight–it doesn't matter. We're human. We all came from the same thing."
Even so, Garcia expressed a sentiment of forgiveness toward the spa manager.
