In its continuing efforts to market franchise longevity and keep film-goers interested in familiar branding, Hollywood has successfully resuscitated the supernatural film-genre with the hit 2013 release of "The Conjuring," which starred Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the famed real-life ghost-hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren. Since then, director James Wan ("Aquaman") has capitalized on our inherent fears of ghosts and specters - and cursed dolls and spirits - expanding a series of interconnected tales of terror.

The latest, "The Curse of La Llorona," available now on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD, takes one of the most well-known Mexican folk tales about the Weeping Widow and turns it into the big screen's latest movie monster. Starring Linda Cardellini (from the hit Netflix series "Dead To Me") and directed by Michael Chaves (and, also, produced by James Wan), the ghost story is set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the 1970s. Cardellini plays a tireless social worker and widowed mother who is at the service of her community, especially its struggling single mothers.

When one of her cases leads to the mysterious murder of two young boys, the grieving mother of the victims reveals that they are all at the mercy of a vengeful specter, a spirit from the grave called La Llorona – the Weeping Widow – who claims the most innocent, drowning children to appease her own tortured soul! Soon the family is caught in the middle of a fight for their very souls, as the supernatural threat haunts their lives and invades their home from the shadows. With several heart-stopping chills and thrills "The Curse of La Llorona" will entice fans of "The Conjuring" and certainly appeal to the horror-film devotee.

Using both practical and digital effects, the film skillfully places its narrative in a very believable realm, which only helps to enhance the tension. The introduction of La Llorona as a ghost to rival its contemporaries from Annabelle to The Nun from "The Conjuring" universe may leave a little to desire, but you will definitely not want to watch this one alone, especially on a dark and stormy night. The Blu-Ray includes several behind-the-scenes features that explore the myth of the curse and the effects that went into creating the movies leading ghoul!
