X-Men: Dark Phoenix
JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Ashes to ashes!
The latest installment in 20th Century Fox's most long-lived franchise may well signal the studio's last in the Marvel film universe. "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, closes a chapter with one of the comic book's most coveted arcs. Starring "Game Of Thrones" Sophie Turner as the titular character, this is the story of Jean Grey, one of the first students of Charles Xavier's (James McAvoy), who evolves beyond anyone's imagination into a being far more than just a mutant.
After the last film, "X-Men: Apocalypse," Simon Kinberg, the screenwriter, had lined up the founding members of the popular superhero team of mutant misfits come to life from the pages of Marvel Comics most popular books. Among those most familiar to fans are Scott Summers/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Ororo Munroe/Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Jean (Turner) herself, who make up the "new class" that inherited the roles from the original roster introduced in the 2000 hit film directed by Bryan Singer that helped pioneer the genre to blockbuster greatness.
In "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," Sophie Turner's Jean Grey uses her telekinesis in the rescue of a space shuttle crew who find themselves in the path of a space anomaly that is sure to cook them with its intense interplanetary radiation. With only seconds to spare, the X-Men are able to intervene, but while Jean is able to hold everything together, she uses her ability to "move" the X-Men and the rescued astronauts out of the path of danger – unfortunately, the danger is drawn to her! Overcome by its presence, Jean makes short work of the cloud, but at what cost?
Jean now uncovers reserves of her own power that are near limitless. Her interaction with the anomaly has accessed areas of her brain that have also revealed secrets and betrayals, hidden from her by her mentor Xavier, and while she searches for some answers another threat emerges with sights on the power of creation coursing through Jean – looking for a way to control it themselves and turn Jean into an all-consuming weapon of mass destruction. With the world against them once again, the X-Men are more determined than ever to save the day!
"X-men: Dark Phoenix" features a stellar cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Jessica Chastain. Among the bonus features that complete the package are additional Deleted Scenes that didn't make the final film that would have helped flesh some narratives left dangling in the dust, as well as Several Behind-the-Scenes featurettes revealing the work that went into recreating this epic for the large screen. The Blu-ray also includes audio commentary from the filmmakers. Add this disc to your collection of Marvel Films.
