After he was evicted Thursday, "Big Brother 21" houseguest Jack Matthews was forced to watch controversial and offensive comments he made while he was still on the show during a live TV interview with host Julie Chen.
Chen showed Matthews video clips of himself seemingly referring to fellow houseguest Isabella Wang, who is Asian-American, as "rice pudding" as well as derogatory comments he made towards Kemi Fakunle, who is Black. Matthews apologized during his interview with Chen on last week's eviction episode of "Big Brother" and defended himself while reiterating his response in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"When I had made that statement, it had no correlation to Bella's ethnicity," he said of Wang. "Knowing coming out of it that it has been tied into that, I will never be able to apologize enough for the interpretation that was given upon what I said. The reference to what I said was based on comments earlier in the evening that the diet [fellow houseguests] Tommy, Christie, Michie and Kat were on, which was slop, recipes were being created of all different sorts and pudding was a new dessert that was brought up.
"A rice style pudding that was actually slop pudding. Looking back at it, with now the mentionings of Bella and the rice-pudding, I never made a connection until I came out of the house," Matthews added. "And for that I am incredibility sorry to Bella if she was offended in any shape or form, as well as anybody that was offended by my statement at the time."
When asked how it was watching the clips being played back to him – especially remarks he made about Fakunle – Matthews said the moment made him "look to myself on how I try to carry myself in the world as a person and as a human being."
"I'm disappointed with the message that I conveyed. I'm thankful that I'm given the opportunity to explain myself after the show. Kemi and I did not see eye to eye in this game, and there's absolutely better ways I could have handled speaking about it," he told EW. "I look forward to seeing Kemi again. I'd like to apologize for what I said, though a simple apology will never be enough. I think Kemi is a wonderful person, and I do respect her very much."
Matthews is the first member of the jury and will be sequestered until "Big Brother 21" comes to an end on Sept. 25.
Matthews made headlines last month when fans of "Big Brother" who were watching the 24/7 live feeds grew upset by his remarks. A Change.org petition was even launched in order for CBS excess to take action.
