Watch: 'Good Morning America' Host Laura Spencer Apologizes for Prince George & Ballet Comments
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"Good Morning America" host Lara Spencer is apologizing after coming under fire for comments she made about Prince George's curriculum, which includes ballet.
"Prince William says 'Prince George absolutely loves ballet,' " she said last week. "I've got news for you, Prince William. We'll see how long that lasts."
Many took issue with Spencer, saying that she mocked him for liking ballet, and it didn't take long before the Twitter hashtag #BoysDanceToo began to trend.
On Saturday, Spencer apologized for her comments. Taking to Instagram, the "Flea Market Flip" host shared a photo of lilacs and wrote: "My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday. From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it."
She again apologized Monday morning live on "Good Morning America."
"I screwed up," Spencer said, adding that her comments were "insensitive" and "stupid" and that she's "deeply sorry."
"I have listened and learned about the bravery that it takes for a young boy to pursue a career in dance," she continued. "And last night, I sat down with three influential dancers who have lived it firsthand."
She then showed a segment where she interviewed three professional male dancers: Robbie Fairchild, Travis Wall, and Fabrice Calmels. Spencer said she hoped to "turn a negative into a positive."
"For me the lesson is that words hurt, and it was not my intention, but it was insensitive and I thank you all for giving me the opportunity to apologize personally to you and for you guys coming in here to talk to me and to educate me and, again, I'm really sorry," Spencer told the men, who accepted her apology.
