Singer Beth Ditto Drags Taylor Swift's Gay Anthem: 'Thanks Straight White Girl'

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

In a new interview with the British newspaper The Independent, singer Beth Ditto took aim at Taylor Swift over her single "You Need to Calm Down," which has been labeled a gay anthem.

The Gossip leader opened up about the "bullshit going on in queer culture" and the "pink pound," which Ditto say is "a whole market deliberately aimed at gay men to take their money." She then took aim at Swift and her recent song "You Need to Calm Down," which features the lyrics, "Why are you mad? / When you could be GLAAD? (You could be GLAAD) / Sunshine on the street at the parade / But you would rather be in the dark age" and "...shade never made anybody less gay." The video for the track also featured a number of LGBTQ icons.

"That's what Taylor Swift did," Ditto told The Independent. "I was like, great anthem... straight white girl? Cool, thanks. Released just in time for Pride! I wonder where the proceeds are going for that, you know? That's the thing that bothers me about it."

Writer Roisin O'Connor, who interviewed the singer for the newspaper, pointed out that Swift did donate $113,000 to an origination that fights anti-LGBTQ bills in Tennessee and also wrote a letter to her Republican senator Lamar Alexander, urging him to protect LGBTQ people.

"She did? She is doing that?" Ditto responded. "Good, she should! Especially if you're releasing a song like that. That makes me happy, I'm glad she's doing that."

Ditto spoke with The Independent about her role on the new Showtime dramedy "On Becoming a God in Central Florida," which stars Kirsten Dunst. She also opened up about her relationship Ted Kwo, a musician and animator who is openly trans.

"It's so awesome, and he's fantastic," Ditto, 38, said. "I feel like I might be in my first adult relationship. There's a lot of trust, and he knows himself really well."
