Filmmaker Richard Linklater is returning to his "Boyhood" roots.

Tony Award winner Ben Platt, along with "Booksmart" star Beanie Feldstein and "Everybody Wants Some!!" actor Blake Jenner are set to appear in Linklater's adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along," which will be shot over the next 20 years, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This isn't the first time the director has taken years to film a project. His Oscar-winning "Boyhood" was shot over 12 years.

The musical is based on the 1934 play of the same name written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. It follows Franklin Shepard, a talented Broadway musical composer, who leaves his friends and career behind for Hollywood. The story starts at the peak of his career and goes backwards in time to show the highlights of his life.

Jenner is set to play Shepard with Feldstein playing his friend, theater critic Mary Flynn. THR notes principal photography has already been completed for the first segment of the film.

"I first saw and fell in love with Merrily in the '80s, and I can't think of a better place to spend the next 20 years than in the world of a Sondheim musical. I don't enter this multiyear experience lightly, but it seems the best, perhaps the only way, to do this story justice on film," said Linklater in a statement.
