It's Official: Billy Porter Will Play Fairy Godmother in New Live-Action 'Cinderella'
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
After it was reported Billy Porter was in talks to play the Fairy Godmother in an upcoming live-action "Cinderella" movie, the "Pose" star confirmed his role in the project Saturday during the 20th New Yorker Festival, People magazine reports.
The new film, from Sony, will star pop singer Camila Cabello as the titular princess as well as Indina Menzel, who will play the evil stepmother.
The new movie will be directed and written by Kay Cannon, who helmed the 2018 comedy "Blockers" and was a writer for "Pitch Perfect." This modern retelling of "Cinderella" is based on an idea by James Corden. Cabello's Cuban and Mexican roots will likely play an important part in the film. She'll also be involved with music for the project.
News of Porter's role in the film comes soon after he became the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on the LGBTQ series "Pose."
