Watch: Josh Gad Says Gay Moment in 'Beauty and the Beast' Remake was His Idea

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

There was much controversy about the blink-or-you-miss it "gay moment" in the 2017 live-action remake of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast. But actor Josh Gad is now saying he pitched the idea to have his character LeFou dance with another man in Bill Condon's movie.

Gad's comments came during an interview on SiriusXM channel Radio Andy with Andy Cohen Monday, The Hollywood Reporter points out. The actor was there to talk about his new film "Frozen 2," but also opened up about his role in "Beauty and the Beast," which also starred Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast.

"Here's what we decided – we decided that LeFou's happy ending would be to dance with another man," he told Cohen, adding that it was his idea. "It was my pitch, that's how I really wanted the movie to end. I was so amazed they let us do it."

"That became such a controversial thing, apparently, even though it was only three seconds of screen time," Gad went on to say. "We never put a spotlight on it. We never meant to put a spotlight on it. It became a conflated, weird controversy."

Though many lauded the moment in "Beauty and the Beast" a number of conservative Disney fans took issue with it. Nevertheless, Gad said Condon "was very proud of the moment" and "the moment speaks for itself."

"In light of that fact that so many people were like, 'Blah, blah, blah,' there were so many people who stood up and applauded that moment and were so excited about it," the actor told Cohen. "I think there is still lots more work to be done in equal representation, and I really hope that Disney keeps finding more ways to do that."
