Watch: Hulu Streams Gay New Year's Eve Horror Movie 'Midnight Kiss'

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The latest film in Hulu's anthology series "Into the Dark" is called "Midnight Kiss" -- a gay slasher movie that takes place on New Year's Eve.

Produced by Blumhouse ("Get Out," "The Purge"), "Midnight Kiss" is directed by Carter Smith ("Jamie Marks Is Dead") and written by Erlingur Thoroddsen ("Rift") and stars Augustus Prew, Scott Evans, Ayden Mayeri, Lukas Gage, Chester Lockhart and Adam Faison. Here's Hulu's discretion of the film:

A group of longtime gay best friends and their resident fruit fly as they head to a beautiful desert home to celebrate New Year's Eve. One of their annual traditions is to play a game called "Midnight Kiss," a sexy but ultimately dangerous challenge to find that special someone to help you ring in the New Year. As friendships have grown strained with secrets, jealousy and resentment, the group faces another challenge when a sadistic killer wants in on the game. Relationships are put to the test and truths are revealed as the night turns into a fight for survival.

Thoroddsen and Carter, who are both gay, spoke with IndieWire about "Midnight Kiss," saying that Blumhouse was excited over the concept of a gay slasher story.

"They were very open to kind of different interpretations of what that meant. They kind of let me just do my thing," Thoroddsen said. "Once Carter [Smith] was on board, they kind of give us a little bit of free reign to play within those parameters."

"I think that says a lot right there," Smith added. "It isn't something we brought to them and they hem-hawed about, and were like, 'Oh, I don't know, blah, blah, blah.' This is something that they actively wanted, which was kind of exciting."

Thoroddsen went on to say that he wanted "the gay characters to be upfront and center, to be the protagonists and have this as their story."

"So it wasn't putting one gay friend or some extra characters on the sidelines; it was really focusing on a group of all-gay friends and trying to be very true to how this group of friends would interact," he told IndieWire.

Smith said both Hulu and Blumhouse were "very excited by this idea of casting queer actors to play characters."
