Last fall it was reported that NBC's upcoming streaming service the Peacock is rebooting the beloved early 90s sitcom "Saved by the Bell." Variety is now reporting that transgender actor Josie Totah has been cast to lead the series.
Totah will star as Lexi, who is described as a beautiful, sharp-tongued cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High School. She's both loved and feared by her classmates.
"Saved by the Bell" original cast members Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley will be reprising their roles as well as serving as producers. The show will also be about Zack Morris, originally played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who is now the governor of California. He's in hot water for closing too many low-income schools in the state and proposes to send the students affected by the closures to the highest performing schools, including Bayside. The influx of new and diverse students will give the privileged teens of Bayside a reality check, Variety reports.
Totah previously started in "Glee," "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and came out as trans in an essay published in Time magazine in 2018.
