Producers from "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 12 announced Friday that they have disqualified a contestant after at least five men came forward to accuse the drag queen of catfishing.
At least five men told BuzzFeed last week that Joey Gugliemelli, who performs under the drag queen name Sherry Pie, allegedly posed as a casting director, using a fake name, and coerced them to into sending him "embarrassing audition tapes of themselves saying and doing degrading things," the website wrote.
After BuzzFeed's report, Gugliemelli shared an apology on Facebook.
The official "Drag Race" Twitter account shared a statement Friday, just hours before the second episode of Season 12 was set to air on VH1.
"'In light of recent developments and Sherry Pie's statement, Sherry Pie has been disqualified from RuPaul's Drag Race...,'" the tweet reads. "'...Out of respect for the hard work of the other queens, VH1 will air the season as planned. Sherry will not appear in the grand finale scheduled to be filmed later this spring.' – spokesperson for VH1 and World of Wonder."
The same message appeared as a disclaimer before the airing of the Friday night episode, where Sherry Pie was prominently featured and ended up in the top two of the week's competition. Gugliemelli has yet to respond to VH1/World of Wonder's decision.
