Disney is Giving 90s 'Hercules' Movie a Live-Action Remake

"Hercules," the beloved 1997 animated film, is the latest movie to get the Disney live-action remake, according to Variety.

Disney is in the early stages of the project but the studio has tapped "Avengers" filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo to helm the movie. Dave Callaham ("The Expendables," "Godzilla," "Wonder Woman 1984", who Variety calls an "action specialist," will be writing the script.

The 90s animated film follows a young Hercules (Tate Donovan/Josh Keaton) as he struggles accepting who he is as half mortal and half Greek god. After getting training from Philoctetes, a sassy satyr mentor, (voiced by Danny DeVito), Hercules learns to use his powers for good and to fight evil, including Hades (James Woods) as he strikes up a romantic relationship with Meg (Susan Egan).

Though there's been no official casting for the film, Josh Gad (who has appeared in several Disney projects), suggested Ariana Grande could play Meg as she recently sang the character's ballad during ABC's "Disney Family Singalong."

"She would amazing as Meg, she would be perfect, I would love to see that happen," Gad told Variety in a separate story.

Gad went on to deny he'll play Philoctetes.

"I am good, I feel like I definitely have had and continue to have an incredible run of projects with the Disney company, but I don't think anyone wants to see me take on yet another role in a live-action remake of an animated movie," Gad said. "I personally think they should just cast Danny DeVito again, that seems to me the best option."
