You may not know who Juan Melecio is, but you might recognize him from his adult performer identity, Antonio Biaggi.
And this week he made the jump to politics when he "submitted his paperwork on Monday to run for a commission seat in Wilton Manors, in Florida's Broward County," the British newspaper
"Melecio said he's made appearances in 'scores' of pornographic films, but said he's currently more focused on Biaggi Productions, his production company," continues The Sun.
"Melecio, who is openly gay and married, said one of his goals is to make the city more inclusive for all residents, not just those who are gay," .
"We should have more festivals, not just Gay Pride," he added.
Melecio, who turned 42 on Wednesday, has lived in the city for a year-and-a-half. Last year he sold a spa and barber shop in Wilton Manors that he had owned for four years. He has been a South Florida resident for a decade.
In an interview with South Florida Gay News published this week, he explained why he is running. "Being a business owner in the city of Wilton Manors and a resident. It got me very involved in the business association; going to commission meetings I've noticed a lack of leadership during the construction of Wilton Drive," he said.
"There is also a lack of new ideas to grow tourism and to grow the city of Wilton Manors....
"My main project will be to create a healthy and attractive city in order to improve tourism in the city. I had a 10-year background working in tourism in Puerto Rico," Melecio explained.
He also emphasized his ties to the community.
"I'm a person who is very involved in the city. I'm not the typical politician that comes out every two or four years. I'm here all year round helping charities in the city for kids, domestic abuse, pet projects, the leather community, and the arts. Every time they asked me to help out with any charity I'm always there. I have a lot of great ideas and I am the type of person that will fight to the end so I can create what I want for the city. I also love to listen to the people in our community, and as a former business owner I know what the businesses in Wilton Manor need."
"Two commission seats and the mayor's seat are up for grabs in the November election. Qualifying lasts through noon Friday," reports the Sun Sentinel.
Following Provincetown, Wilton Manors has the second-highest percentage of gay couples in the country, according to data from the 2010 US Census.
