Review: "As If!" - 'Clueless' Turns 25

As if!

Has it already been 25 years since "Clueless" first burst on the scene?

A newly released limited-edition steelbook release of the film has come to Blu-ray, with a digital copy included, to commemorate the milestone. Watching the film, which is based on Jane Austen's "Emma," you realize that it holds up as well today as it did in 1995, even if there are a few things here and there that might not fly any more. But who would have thought Cher's immigration speech would be just as relevant now as it was when she originally gave it in Mr. Hall's debate class?

If you have seen the film a million times and are looking for a new way to enhance the experience, you can watch it with the "Clue or False" trivia game. In a "Pop-up Video" style, trivia questions about the movie and things referenced in the film show up every couple of minutes. You answer using your remote control to gain points throughout the film.

All of the features included on the set are repackaged from the 10th anniversary "Whatever" edition. It's a double-edged sword. Repackaging these features means that actress Brittany Murphy is included throughout – though seeing her makes you miss her energy even more, once you see her so bubbly onscreen during her interviews. On the other hand, the previous edition didn't include interviews from Alicia Silverstone. Pretty much everyone else from the cast, except her, are included. This is disappointing, and a huge gap in the retrospective aspects of disc.

The features include "The Class of '95," a look at the then-unknown cast, a "Suck 'n' Blow" tutorial, and you can't talk about "Clueless" without having a full featurette looking at the many fashions that were included in the film. The fashion was almost a character in itself. Altogether, the handful of features offer over an hour of behind-the-scenes goodness.

If you already own the "Whatever" edition, there isn't anything new to see here. You are already ahead of the curve. However, for the fans who don't have it, this is a well curated package of features that will make you appreciate the film and it even offers you a fun new way to watch it. You might even, like, totally learn a thing or two from the trivia track!
