Review: 'Muppets Now' Updates A Timeless Favorite

Some things just never go out of style.
Like, for instance, The Muppets! That multi-talented and lovable bunch has been a part of the pop-culture vernacular for as long as anyone can remember. In the '70s "The Muppet Show," starring all the major players (from Jim Henson's most popular creation Kermit the Frog and Frank Oz's Miss Piggy and Fozzy Bear), was dedicated must-see, primetime viewing! The variety show format was a favorite among audiences and guest stars, which included everyone from rocker Alice Cooper to Ethel Merman, and more.
The Muppets have succeeded at conquering every form of media, from the small screen to the movie blockbuster and back, and now are settling in on Disney+ to conquer the world of subscriber-based services with their new show "Muppets Now," which is formatted as an online steaming show with constantly evolving content in order to keep up with the fickle tastes of the latest Gen Zer or Millennial (that may not have grown up loving the muppets). There's something for everyone here!
Missy Piggy is now the ultimate online influencer and teaches us the latest fitness trends while sporting the absolutely most fashionable gear, and sweating through heated yoga with Taye Diggs and celebrity advice from Linda Cardellini. Just remember: it's all about Piggy, so you can imagine how it all unfolds when Kermit sits down for an introspective celebrity interview. Among his first guests is none other than drag legend RuPaul. It isn't long before the rest of the entourage hijacks the session from Kermit, and RuPaul is sashaying away!
In another genius and original new segment that features cooking contests pitting celebrity chefs against the cagey culinary feasts of the Swedish Chief; in record time, both must produce a dish of delights, but fair warning: Only one of them will emerge as anything near edible. In other words, sour cream-coated moles is not an ingredient found in the traditional taco! By the end of the show, everyone emerges trilingual – willing to try anything once. The other segments feature muppet greats like Beaker and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Gonzo and more.
If you've always loved the muppets, then "Muppets Now" is exactly what you've been looking for and it keeps the faith of past muppet adventure, with guests and unexpected moments. The comedy is madcap and easily unoffensive that will appeal to the whole family. "Muppets Now" keeps it simple and doesn't over complicate the format, which also lends to the online authenticity of the show, and at the end of the day, it's just fun to tune in and check out Miss Piggy reading her friends for filth in the Chat Room!
"Muppets Now" is streaming now at Disney+.
