Ivanka Trump's Goya Beans Tweet Sparks Social Media Backlash
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Ivanka Trump is at the center of a social media storm after tweeting a photo of herself holding a can of Goya beans and writing the company's slogan, "If It's Goya, it has to be good" in both English and Spanish.
The picture, which was also shared on President Donald Trump's daughter's Facebook and Instagram pages, came not long after Goya CEO Robert Unanue visited the White House last week and praised the president.
"We're all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder," he said.
His comments sparked a call for a boycott against the brand but Unanue said he was going to "not apologize." Soon after, the hashtags #BoycottGoya, #GoyaFoods and #Goyaway began trending on Twitter but Unanue called the campaigns a "suppression of speech."
Twitter users were quick to react to Ivanka Trump's latest tweet, and some questioned the ethics involved with a senior White House official seemingly endorsing Goya. According to the Department of Justice, "an employee may not use his public office for his own private gain or for that of persons or organizations with which he is associated personally. An employee's position or title should not be used to coerce; to endorse any product, service or enterprise; or to give the appearance of governmental sanction."
Among those to take issue was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who wrote in Spanish, "If it's Trump, it has to be corrupt."
