Is that Jared Leto beneath that white wig?
It may be. It was announced yesterday that the Oscar-winning actor will play Andy Warhol in an upcoming biopic, the Hollywood Reporter announced.
The actor joins producer Michael De Luca ("The Social Network") and Terence Winter ("The Wolf of Wall Street") for the film that is using "the 1989 Victor Bockris book, 'Warhol: The Biography,' as a jumping-off point. (Leto and De Luca jointly acquired the rights to the book, having had a desire to partner on a project for some time now, according to sources)," THR writes.
"The part seems tailor-made for Leto, who won an Oscar for playing a gay man dying from AIDS in 2013's 'Dallas Buyers Club 'and drew legions of fans for his take on Batman's insane villain 'The Joker' in this summer's 'Suicide Squad.' (The actor currently is filming the untitled 'Blade Runner' sequel being directed by Denis Villeneuve.)"
Warhol is one of the 20th century leading artists who lived his life in the celebrity spotlight. His innovative art – he was the engine behind the Pop Art movement of the early 1960s, coupled enigmatic and often eccentric personality help elevate his art and persona. He was a visionary who looked ahead to today's celebrity culture; a canny businessman; a hypochondriac; a practicing Catholic; a gay man who (if the recent Adam Gopnik biography published this summer is to believed) had an active sex life; a movie maker; and a tabloid celebrity who was nearly murdered by a radical feminist.
