Is Kevin Spacey Trolling the Press with His Wedding Ring?

READ TIME: 3 MIN.

Someone put a ring on Kevin Spacey's finger. The question is whether the 61-year old actor is married or has just found another way to troll the media.

The disgraced Oscar winner was seen cycling around London on Thursday with a new accessory – a wedding ring, reports the Daily Mail.

Perhaps, though, the ring is merely a prop since in a Christmas video he put up in 2018 he puts a ring on the fourth finger of his right hand, which has become the standard for many LGBTQ people.

Skip Sullivan uploaded a director's commentary on the video and addresses the moment when Spacey puts the ring on. "This bit where Kevin puts a ring on his finger was his idea. Apparently it is a reference to a TV show he was on."

Spacey has never been married.

Spacey's public shaming began in October 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual assault when both actors were appearing on Broadway in 1986. Rapp was 14 at the time and Spacey was 26.

"But Kevin - who was then hit by over 30 additional accusations by other men about his predatory advances - tried to get some exercise in the English capital, flashing the steel band on his wedding finger as he rode," writes the Daily Mail.

Spacey was long suspected of being gay. In 1999 the British newspaper The Sunday Times published in their magazine that his "love affair with acting, and the absence of a visible partner in the life of an attractive 40-year-old, has resulted in Esquire magazine asserting two years ago that he must be gay".

Asked by the Times if was gay, he responded: "I chose for a long time not to answer these questions because of the manner in which they were asked, and because I was never talking to someone I trusted, so why should I?"

In a 2007 interview with Gotham Magazine (quoted by Heavy.com), Spacey said: "I've never believed in pimping my personal life out for publicity. Although I might be interested in doing it, I will never do it. People can gossip all they want; they can speculate all they want. I just happened to believe that there's a separation between the public life and the private life. Everybody has the right to a private life no matter what their professions are."

After Rapp's accusations, Spacey came out. "I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man," he said in the context of an apology to Rapp. Many LGBTQ activists and out personalities criticized him at the time that he went public with being gay to change the subject from him having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a minor.

After Rapp came forward, others followed accusing the actor of inappropriate sexual behavior, which led to his being cut from the Netflix's hit series "House of Cards," where he played Machiavellian president of the United States; as well as being replaced by Christopher Plummer in Ridley Scott's "All the Money in the World" where he played J. Paul Getty. It was an unusual move since Spacey's performance was in the can and reshoots with Plummer were necessary.

Spacey has kept a low profile since then, having only gone public with a couple of bizarre YouTube videos where he channeled his "House of Cards" persona Frank Underwood. You can watch Skip Sullivan's director's commentary on his 2018 Christmas video below.
