Watch: Actor Daniel Newman Responds to Twitter Backlash for Island Pic with Video About Body Shaming
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Actor Daniel Newman, best known for his stint on "The Walking Dead," is being hit with a Twitter backlash this weekend after posting a photo of himself with a number of shirtless guys who appeared to be on vacation. The pic, along with his caption, quickly became a meme but Newman, who deleted his tweets, responded to the controversy with a video mostly about body shaming.
"Summer fun! (*private island all tested negative multiple times wear a man)," Newman wrote in the now-deleted tweet, which came with a pic that showed about 25 men and a woman posing in their bathing suits while outside.
He followed up his tweet adding: "PS...We look white as fuck you all know my ex's are black [sic], Latin, Asian I love ALL flavors & sizes!! & all my family is half Black. We got a diverse group but unfortunately the brothas invited & girl friends invited had to work & didn't come this time. Missin em!!"
Though the messages have been deleted, they were screenshot by a number of people on Twitter.
Some folks also pointed out a tweet Newman sent, which is also deleted, about diversity just hours before sharing the photo.
"Note: if you have depth, your 'clique' or 'tribe' will almost never Look [sic] like you. Don't sweat it when your peers reject you. Close your eyes & look for people with the same goals & Interests [sic], not the same body type (skin color, bodytype [sic], ethnicity, gender, sexuality) #diversity."
I didn't take long before Twitter reacted to Newman's tweets, and a meme soon took shape, mocking his tweet.
But Newman fired back with a video defending himself, discussing body shaming, calling out trolls and talked about protesting in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
"Sending you all huge. #StopBodyShaming. Be Proud of yourself! This is me. #Diversity #BlacklivesMatter #GetTested #Loveyourself," he tweeted.
In the video, Newman, who is shirtless, shows parts of his torso and chest and says, "The reason why I'm showing you this is because I love my body. I love my wrinkles and I love my receding hairline.
"We as a culture deal with so much with body shaming and feeling insecure and I just tripped up and all of the trolls are on me now and I'm not going to do anything to the trolls," he went on to say. "I get it you're doing job, you get paid to stir up drama and sell it to news outlets...that's whatever. But for the people out there really affected by this I wanted to say two things: Love yourself. This is my body. I meant it when I said about diversity and being yourself and having a friend group that is diverse.
"I'll also own it; my family's half Black...Latin...I own it, that after, like five hours after I posted diversity, a friend of mine invited me down to a birthday event," the actor added. "So I'm down here and I had no idea what the crowd was going to be like. All tested negative. But they're all fit. They're all jocks. And so I was laughing along too that I posted a photo of a bunch of fit people. So I got dragged for it...Look. Not talking to trolls. I'm talking to you guys."
