'Why Do We Listen To People Who Lost Elections?' Wonders AOC, Slamming Ex-Sen. Claire McCaskill
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
On MSNBC Wednesday night former Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill speculated on why Dems are losing voters.
"I think it began around cultural issues," McCaskill said as reported by as reported by refinery29.com, referencing the waning support for Democrats among certain blocs of voters.
"Whether you're talking guns, or issues surrounding the right to abortion in this country, or things like gay marriage and the rights for 'transsexuals' and other people who we as a party have tried to 'look after' and make sure that they're treated fairly. As we circled those issues, we left some voters behind and Republicans dove in with a vengeance and grabbed those voters... You saw it in the South, I've seen it in some rural areas of my state."
McCaskill continued: "So we've got to get back to the meat and potatoes issues, we've got to get back to the issues where we are taking care of their families, and we also need to quit acting like we're smarter than everybody else because we're not."
Her comments got an immediate pushback by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who wondered in a tweet: "Why do we listen to people who lost elections as if they are experts in winning elections?"
McCaskill lost in 2018 in a Senate race to Republican challenger Josh Hawley. As of February 2019, McCaskill is a political analyst for MSNBC and NBC.
In that race "McCaskill supported Trump's tough talk on the then-incoming migrant caravan from Central America, as well as the administration's crackdown on what it called endemic fraudulent asylum claims," reports Fox News.
"I do not want our borders overrun. And I support the president's efforts to make sure they're not," she said at the time.
"McCaskill tried her approach,She ran as a caravan-hysteria Dem& lost while grassroots organizers won progressive measures in MO," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "Her language here shows how she took her base for granted."
McCaskill also referred to Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren as "crazy Democrats" in 2018. OAC endorsed Sanders in this year's Presidential primaries.
She also had pointed words for AOC when she was leaving Congress in 2018. "'I'm a little confused why she's the thing,' McCaskill told CNN, referring to the 29-year-old future lawmaker in an interview published this week," Business Insider reported. "'But it's a good example of what I'm talking about, a bright, shiny new object came out of nowhere and surprised people when she beat a very experienced congressman.'"
Business Insider also cited another interview with McCaskill for NPR in which she criticized progressive candidates for being out-of-touch. "This demand for purity, this looking down your nose at people who want to compromise, is a recipe for disaster for the Democrats. Will we ever get to a majority in the Senate again, much less to 60, if we do not have some moderates in our party?"
