'I'm Out': Wentworth Miller Steps Away from 'Prison Break,' Straight Roles
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Out actor Wentworth Miller has announced he won't be returning if "Prison Break" comes back to TV, saying, "I just don't want to play straight characters," Deadline reports.
Miller made the remarks in Nov. 8 Instagram post, in which he commented about online anti-LGBTQ hate that trolls directed at his account.
"I'm not concerned for myself," Miller wrote. "I can't be 'bullied' in this space. I have too much power. 'Delete. Block. Deactivate.' Etc," he said. "But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea... I don't want them exposed to bullshit.
"On a related note... I'm out," Miller added. "Of PB. Officially."
The actor added: "I just don't want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).
"So. No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons... I understand this is disappointing. I'm sorry."
The series had been rumored to be headed for another season, following its initial four-season run from 2005 - 2008, a 2009 TV movie, and then a nine-episode revival in 2017.
The show made a star of Miller, who played Michael Scofield, a man who deliberately gets sent to prison in order to break out his brother, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell), who had been incarcerated for a murder he didn't commit.
Miller came out in 2013. He starred in the nine-episode 2017 revival, despite his character having seemingly been killed in the TV movie.
Miller finished his Instagram post with this: "If you're hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one...
"That's your work."
Fellow cast members posted their support, Newsweek reported, with Sarah Wayne Callies posting at Instagram, "With gratitude for all the work we did together, and with deep love, I'm voicing my support for that choice."
Callies went on to add that "the cast of 'prison break' is a queer-friendly space. we stand with – and among – our friends & family in the LGBTQ+ community with full-throated support for their rights and artistic work. all the time. Always."
Purcell chimed in with, "Fully support and understand your reasoning. Glad you have made this decision for you[r] health and your truth. Keep the posts coming... love ya brother."
TVLine reported that, according to a source at the network, "a sixth season of Prison Break is not currently in active development."
