On "The Late Late Show" on Monday night, Sam Smith opened up to host James Corden about the pluses and minuses of coming out as non-binary last September.

"The 'Stay With Me' hitmaker, 27, said although it has been 'wonderful', the decision was also 'more of a struggle' than expected due to 'all the backlash,' " reports the Daily Mail.

"All in all it's been wonderful," they said. "I've always felt the way I've felt. And being able to tell everyone that and feel so much more open about certain parts of my personality and life has been absolutely incredible."

They added, "there have been some struggles, of course -- including the leak of a letter they wrote to their family announcing the intention to change their pronouns -- including the backlash from people who are unsupportive of gender non-conforming and trans people," writes Billboard.

"It's been amazing but it's also really, really hard to see all the backlash and the amount of people that are still so unsupportive of gender non-conforming people and trans people all around the world."

"They explained that coming out as non-binary has allowed them to 'show all different sides of myself musically' whereas they 'definitely felt scared' to reveal their femininity before," adds the Daily Mail.

He also told Corden that he misses his pre-COVID life. "I miss sweaty bodies James, I really do! I only realized recently that, like, clubbing for me is like a genuine hobby of mine.

"It's how I get my exercise, it's what I love to do. It's been good, it's been nice to have a break, but I'm missing to be around people for sure."

They were on the show to promote his newest album "Love Goes" which was released on October 30. It had been scheduled for a May release.

Smith performed the track "Diamonds" from the album.

They also expressed their happiness over Joe Biden's win in the American election. "Oh my God, look, for me and my circle of friends and family I'm just so overjoyed. It's so nice to hear some good news coming out of America for a change," said Smith.
