Report: 90s Club Kid Icon, Convicted Murderer Michael Alig Dead at 54

READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Michael Alig, a fixture of New York City's queer club kid scene who was later convicted of manslaughter, has died, according to a report from TMZ, which adds that "authorities believe the cause of death was a heroin [overdose]." He was 54.

The sources also told TMZ one of Alig's friends visited him at his New York City home just after midnight on Dec. 25 and found him dead. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the outlet notes.

Alig, a party promoter, and his roommate Robert D. "Freeze" Riggs, killed Andre "Angel" Melendez, who was also a club kid, in 1996. A year later, Alig pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and both he and Riggs were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. Alig was released on parole in 2014.

In 2003, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato directed "Party Monster," which followed Alig's rise to fame in the club kid scene and his involvement in the murder of Melendez. The film stars Macaulay Culkin, marking his first performance in nearly nine years at the time. It also stars Seth Green, Chlo Sevigny, Wilson Cruz, Wilmer Valderrama, Natasha Lyonne, Dylan McDermott, Diana Scarwid and Marilyn Manson
