Review: 'Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar' is Goofy, Winning Fun
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 3 MIN.
God bless Kristin Wiig.
After being slighted with less screen time than she deserved in "Wonder Woman 84," the gifted actress and comedian returns to her silly roots "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar."
Co-written with co-star Annie Mumolo (her "Bridesmaids" co-writer and co-Oscar nominee), the fluffy comedy centers on two middle-aged white ladies named Barb (Mumolo) and Star (Wiig) that do middle-aged white lady stuff somewhere in middle America. They both work at Jennifer Convertibles (and then get fired because it's been out of business for a some time) while spending their nights with a group of frenemies (headed by Vanessa Bayer) discussing mundane topics and eating Hot Dog Soup. (Truly, the worst book club ever.)
When these two roommates realize they aren't living life to the fullest, they are prompted by a "go get 'em" friend, played by Wendy McLendon-Covey, to take a vacation at the Vista Del Mar resort in Florida. With newfound excitement, the two ladies take off for the land of umbrella drinks, banana boats, and tacky souvenirs.
But this trip won't be as relaxing as they thought. While they are thrilled to garner the attention of a hot tourist named Edgar (Jamie Dornan), he's actually a part of a sinister plan by an evil, vampiric villain (also played by Wiig). Her cohort in crime is a kid named Yoyo (Reyn Doi), who assists in carrying out her evil plot. What, exactly, that is isn't revealed for some time, but we do know that Edgar has been sent to Vista Del Mar to carry it out. He does this because he has been promised that if he does, he and the blood-red lipstick villain can be an "official couple."
Of course, when he gets tangled up with the nave vacationer of Barb and Star, they find themselves not only fighting for his affections, but also fighting to avoid the villain's evil plan.
Clearly Wiig and Mumolo's latest isn't going to hit the creative highs of "Bridesmaids," and it's certainly not as hilarious, but it's one of those silly comedies that keeps a smile on your face and still makes you laugh out loud on occasion.
Wiig is having a blast in her dual roles as the plucky, culotte-wearing Star, as well as the Albino villain. Mumolo is having an equally grand time goofing around as the clueless Barb. Even Dornan gets in on the fun: Not only does he get to show some comedic chops, he sings an entire ballad!
Yes, this movie is also a musical. Sort of. There are two songs in it, one being a big musical number when the gals arrive at the Floridian resort, and then Dornan's ode to love.
Damon Wayans, Jr. shows up as an informant for Edgar, and there are a few other cameos that shall remain a secret.
Truthfully, this is a big, dumb comedy that is smart in that it knows exactly what it is and what it's doing. And it still finds ways to surprise you with its goofy charm. Star is certainly not my favorite character of Wiig's, but her villain is a hoot and the movie wins you over with its genial nuttiness.
Here's hoping Barb and Star are in for more adventures, because I'd happily tag along!
"Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar" will be available to rent on all VOD and OnDemand services February 12th.
