Review: 'Freaky' is One of the Best Horror Comedies in Years

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Cringing upon hearing the news that a new variation of "Freaky Friday" was in the works, I avoided the new swapping bodies film even though the Jamie Lee Curtis/Lindsey Lohan remake in 2003 was a hoot. And then even the most jaded horror movie fans were raving about how much of a bloody good time "Freaky" really is.

Adding in a horror element to the comedic tale of two disparate personalities who accidentally switch bodies works in the film's favor. From the opening scene of "Freaky," it appears that you're in for a gory and violent ride. With homages to both "Scream" and "Halloween" intact, the surprisingly thing about "Freaky" is how sincere it comes across as being..

It's also side-splittingly funny, clever, and well-acted.

Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a high school outcast, bullied often by classmates and even teachers. The Butcher (Vince Vaughn) has been slaughtering people for years and has yet to be caught. When the two collide one night an ancient curse causes Mille to become The Butcher, and vice versa.

Both Newton and Vaughn mimic each other well, but it the end Vaughn outshines in his performance. His comedy prowess is something this reviewer hasn't seen from the actor in many years. It's no wonder that Vaughn won a Critics Choice award as Best Actor in a Horror Movie.

Supporting actors Celeste O'Connor, Misha Osherovich, and Uriah Shelton aid in keeping things rolling on a frenzied course in "Freaky," one of the best comedy/horror hybrid films seen in years.

Bonus features on the Blu-ray are brief and to the point:

"Split Personalities: Millie vs. The Butcher" – an examination of the two lead actors' approach to their opposing roles

"Crafting the Kills" – a look at how the murder sequences in the film were created

"Christopher Landon's Brand of Horror" – the director of "Freaky" explains his unique comedy/horror approach

"Final Girl Reframed" – explains why the Final Girl theme in "Freaky" differs from other genre films

"Freaky" is out on Blu-ray February 9, 2021 from Universal Pictures.
