Review: Shout! Factory Presents the Definitive 'Event Horizon'
Sam Cohen READ TIME: 2 MIN.
If you wanted a sleek and nasty bit of big-budget horror cinema in the late 1990s and early aughts, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson was your guy.
Not only was his work reliably scary as hell, it was mostly original; Anderson made even the most horrific images thrilling and ponderous.
While we probably won't ever get to see the original director's cut of his 1997 horror film "Event Horizon," the theatrical version is great escape, nontheless.
Shout! Factory and their Scream Factory collection brought "Event Horizon" to Blu-ray with new 4K scan technology, which plays with the original camera negative.
It's a wonderful upgrade over the 2008 Blu-ray, with rich colors, depth, and texture. There's are new interviews with cast and crew, as well, including Anderson himself, who talks in depth about the troubled release of the film.
Needless to say, this is the best that "Event Horizon" has looked at home, and deserves top marks.
Event Horizon is a top-of-the-line ship designed for space exploration, but seven years ago it vanished during its maiden voyage.
Now, in the year 2047, a rescue mission led by intrepid Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) finds Event Horizon and investigates its mysterious disappearance. What Captain Miller and the crew find will be beyond their greatest nightmares and all rational thinking.
Aiding the crew is Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill), who has deep knowledge of the experimental device being housed on Event Horizon. As the crew start getting picked off one by one, you might as feel as if the film is hearkening to similar sci-fi and horror films like "Hellraiser" and "Alien." You'd be correct, but it's in the execution of the story that's unique to Anderson as a filmmaker dealing with such familiar material.
Accompanying the terrific audio and video are a bevy of special features, including:
