Available now in the most remarkable presentation possible for the absolute best home-theater experience "My Fair Lady," starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, is available in stunning 4K Ultra HD and Digital Combo Pack. This edition is a must have for every film enthusiast eager to boast about having the most complete classic film library. The winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, has never looked better, and Hepburn is every bit the celebrated star that legends are made from.
It's a very simple story: Linguistic expert Professor Higgins (Harrison) is fascinated by the woman he overhears causing a commotion on a rainy London Street. Eliza Doolittle (Hepburn) is common, and speaks her mind – loudly! She doesn't adhere to society's expectations, and cares very little for having to convince anyone that she needs to conform to fit a mold. But the professor makes a bet that he can turn Eliza Doolittle into a proper lady, never imagining the effect his protege will have on him and everyone she touches.
It's well known that Hepburn's singing was dubbed by soprano Marni Nixon. Another tidbit is that although Julie Andrews originated the role on the stage, she was unavailable for the film version, due to shooting "Mary Poppins" for Disney.
But Hepburn threw herself unabashedly into the role, delivering a wonderful performance. Eliza Doolittle has become an iconic archetype in the cinema because of Hepburn's dedication – even though she herself knew that Andrews would have been the ideal choice for the feature.
Hepburn would get nominated for an Oscar for her performance. Ironically, she would lose to Julie Andrews for her role in "Mary Poppins."
Eliza Doolittle's introduction to high society, which finds her clad in stunning attire, remains one of the film's highlights. Fashion icon that she was, Hepburn isn't eclipsed by the scene's wardrobe. (The Ascot dress and hat she wears were designed by Cecil Beaton; the ensemble nabbed $3.7 million at an auction.) The film's costumes are a sight, and their influences are extremely relevant in popular culture, having continuously inspired many artists, pop-stars, and designers. Hepburn's looks from the film are among her most iconic.
The movie's charm is timeless, made so in large part by the sheer charisma and presence that Audrey Hepburn brings to the role - and the support of her leading man, of course, although the story's premise may cause contemporary audiences to cringe. After all, the idea of a privileged older white man turning an ordinary flower girl into a lady of society (regardless of the notion that his interest in her stems from Eliza's linguistic creativity) is a bit challenging to modern sensibilities. But "My Fair Lady" is still an unparalleled musical classic. The moment that a doe-eyed and resigned Eliza attracts the attention of royalty has a resonance that cannot be easily replicated.
We all wish we could have a moment in which we could be singled out and made to feel exquisite. The dance at the ball, when Eliza meets the baroness, is one of Hollywood's most romantic and thrilling passages – it exemplifies the true magic of filmmaking, and it's no surprise that it's also at that moment that Professor Higgins' deception leads to heartbreak.
Many may debate whether "My Fair Lady" sends a positive message or not, but that would diminish the uniqueness of a film that captures a moment in Hollywood when an A list of talent came together to created a film that will forever remain a classic.
The 4K Ultra HD presents the film in incredibly high definition, and the sound is equally pristine, making for a cinematic experience that feels brand new. The included Blu-ray disc includes a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, and the impact of its legacy, with trips down memory lane featuring access to the Hollywood and London premieres and much, much more.
"My Fair Lady," starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, is available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray on Digital for $24.99.
