In big news for Disney fans, "Mulan" actor BD Wong has revealed that he believes his character Li Shang, from the 90s animated film "Mulan," to be sexually fluid.
Appearing on an episode of the "Las Culturistas" podcast last week, host Bowen Yang posed the question to the Tony Award-winning actor in a straightforward manner, asking if Wong thought Li Shang was attracted to Ping.
Ping, for context, is the name of the male identity Mulan assumes in order to be able to join the army in the film of the same name, and who forms a close friendship with Li Shang. Fans have long suspected that the friendship between the two prior to the revelation of Ping's true identity implied the potential queer leanings of Shang.
Wong answered with some hesitation to start, saying that he "would like to think that he was", and then quickly taking the conversation in a direction regarding the idea of sexual fluidity.
"I don't want to be a coward or anything like that...ok, but you know what, no" Wong added. "Fluidity is a very important thing to acknowledge. When we made the movie, fluidity was not a word. We didn't talk about fluidity. Now, we have fluidity."
Wong then cycled back to the initial question, answering with clear confidence.
"Now we watch Shang and his choices and his actions, and see it through fluidity" Wong said at the end of his realization. "So, in that case, I'm recalibrating my answer. Of course, he was. Of course, he was! What other reason would there be?"
