READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Conservative media went bonkers after comedian and social media influencer Benny Drama posted a short video of himself at the White House to promote vaccinations. In the video, posted to TikTok and Instagram, featuring Benny (Benito Skinner) as his character Kooper the Gen Z intern giving viewers a look at what he calls "a day in my life as a White House intern."
The video features Benny walking into the office of White House press secretary Jen Psaki and saying: "Jenny, I booked you a nail appointment love."
Psaki replies, "I didn't tell you to do that."
"It's called initiative," adds Skinner. Later in the video she tells him, ""We've come a long way in our fight against this virus. We've vaccinated 160 million Americans – are you getting this all down?" The video ends with him urging people to get vaccinated.
The video was shot on July 20, before the current White House mask mandate went into effect. It came about as part of the executive wing's attempt to spread the word about vaccinations by bringing social media influencers into the White House and posting their videos on social media.
Last month 18-year old GenZ influencer Olivia Rodrigo met President Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci at the White House and posted a vid to encourage vaccinations.
"The 27-year-old writer, actor, and digital creative who goes by the handle Benny Drama on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, went to California during the epidemic to further his profession as a sketch artist and comic, a term he still struggles to use to define himself, theNew York Timesreported. Even so, Skinner, whose TikTok handle is @bennydrama7, boasts over 845,000 followers, reports the website Meaww.
He has grown his audience with his impersonations of such personalities as Kim Kardashian, Lana Del Rey, and Shawn Mendes. "He also plays a variety of characters he dreamed up himself, including Jenni the hairdresser, a consummate oversharer who smacks her gum and rips out grays;Kooper the intern, who is egregiously unaware of how to behave professionally at work; andThroat Rippin' Annie, a deranged chain-smoking, beer-drinking, gun-wielding version of an adult Little Orphan Annie," writes the New York Times.
About the video, Benny told Politico"We wanted something that could be funny and that both my followers and the White House followers could laugh at, but would also deliver the really important message of getting vaccinated," Skinner said in an emailed statement.
His video reached more than 450,000 views in about 5 hours, but not without controversy.
First it came from Donald Trump, Jr., who tweeted, "Next they're going to waterboard you till you get vaccinated, though there's no way that would be worse than watching this!!!"
This led to this response from New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz: "Conservative Twitter learning about Benny Drama today and losing their minds is so entertaining, they do not get it"
"During an August 10 Newsmax segment, conservative talk radio host Andrea Kaye claimed that Skinner's video was meant to "push two agendas on children," reports Media Matters, "a "cultural Marxist movement" and the "LGBT agenda as well." Kaye also used the video to argue against public health measures, saying, "Everything that has gone on from the government response to this from the Democrats has had nothing to do with science and everything to do with controlling the minds of Americans, and now it's about controlling the minds of children."
Blaze TV, BlazeTV host Elijah Schaffer called Skinner a "mentally ill, gender confused, narcissistic femboy."
National Pulse Editor-in-Chief Raheem Kassam tweeted, "This is an actual video from inside the Biden White House. What depraved shit is going on in there?"
Babylon Bee senior writer Frank J. Fleming tweeted, "Here's a great idea to get more people vaccinated: Set a new vaccination goal where, if it's hit, this guy gets deported."
Twitter user kaitlin, political fashion police, called Benny a "sloppy dipshit influencer."
Another user Claremont Institute Senior Fellow David Reaboi wrote: "This is so repulsive on so many levels."
Red State entitled their story about the post, "White House's Most Asinine Vaccine Push Yet," While Brietbart headlined: "Biden Admin Brings Cross-Dressing TikTok Star to White House to Push COVID Vaccine."
In response, Benny retweeted a post from user Alex Paterson, which read: "Right-wing media cannot handle @BennyDRAMA7's rise to the White House – melting down over his pro-vaccine message & calling him a "mentally ill, gender confused, narcissistic femboy"
