Review: 'Scream' Arrives on 4K Ultra HD in All Its Gory Glory

Greg Vellante READ TIME: 2 MIN.

It's hard to believe it's been a quarter of a century since the Ghostface killer first asked Drew Barrymore what her favorite scary movie was over a landline phone, before murdering her in what has become one of the most iconic opening scene in the entire history of the slasher genre, the horror genre and, hell, the entire cinematic medium.

"Scream," through and through, is an iconic work on so many levels, and has remained one of my favorite films of all time since it first scared the shit out of me as a kid.

Now, 25 years later, the legendary meta-slasher that entirely changed the game is available on 4K Ultra HD, and ready to enter horror fans' living rooms and home theatres with a crisp, strong release in terms of visual and audio quality. High details and sharp colors abound; this is perhaps the best you'll be able to see Wes Craven's 1996 film in all its gory glory.

The 25th Anniversary release of "Scream" is available as a 4K Ultra HD, Limited-Edition 4K Ultra HD Steelbook and Blu-ray. The 4K copy, particularly impressive, is well worth the modest price tag. Plus, fans will gain access to a brand-new documentary called "A Bloody Legacy: 'Scream' 25 Years Later." This behind-the-scenes look digs into the film and director Wes Craven's legacy, especially in lieu of the upcoming fifth film in the franchise – the first without the late Craven calling the shots. This feature includes archival footage, new interviews with cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, screenwriter Kevin Williamson, as well as the directors and other cast members from the upcoming installment (slated for release in January, 2022).

Audio commentary fans will certainly enjoy the informative and entertaining commentary by Craven and Williamson that's included on this release, but it's from the film's original home video release, so hardcore fans may have already encountered it. Additional bonus features include:

 Production featurette
 Behind the Scenes featurettes
 Q&A with Cast and Crew

"Scream" 4K UHD Blu-ray is available for the suggested retail price of $19.99
