Ryan Murphy Loves His 'Gay Perverted Addicts'
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Ryan Murphy dropped two episodes of the tenth season of "American Horror Story" on Wednesday, this one called "Double Feature." The season will be divided into two parts:"Red Tide," which takes place "by the sea," and"Death Valley," which takes place "by the sand."
The first half – "Red Tide" – is set in Provincetown (where Murphy has a summer home), but not during high season. Instead, it takes place in the dead of winter when the LGBTQ population drops to under 5,000. It stars Finn Wittrock as a writer who brings his pregnant wife (Lily Rabe) and teenage daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) to Ptown in order to finish a long overdue script for a pilot.
But Murphy's resort town is no sleepy writers' colony – instead, Wittrock finds bodies on the beach and is attacked by what appears to be a vicious drug addict who appears to be wanting to bite him.
That Murphy featured this character, who heads a gang of violent thugs, brought shade from one Twitter user, who wrote: "Can Ryan murphy write a season without g*y perverted addicts??? I feel like he's used this trope a million times"
Murphy saw the tweet and replied with: "I will always write gay perverted addicts, sorry."
And he got support from his followers. "Drag Race"iconAdore Delano, responded: "Can I be one? I'll play the evil mermaid who eats her pray [sic] after midnight."
Another responded, "I appreciate what you have created for our community. Thank you."
Another made a casting suggestion: "write emma roberts a gay perverted addict then," followed by a puzzled emoji.
And one person thanked Murphy for providing him "gay, perverted addicts" to act as role models. "This is such a fierce tweet Ryan. The male nudity in Nip/Tuck was a very formative experience for me as a closeted gay man (specifically that you got Mario Lopez to do a nude shower seen with Julian) so I thank you for writing about gay perverted addicts. It speaks to me."
"Red Tide" features many actors from Murphy's repertory company of actors who have worked with him before. In addition to Wittrock and Rabe, there's Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, Denis O'Hare, and Angelica Ross. And joining the series for the first time is Macaulay Culkin.
The new season airs Wednesdays at 10pm on FX.
