EDGE's New Music Friday: Halsey, Kacey Musgraves, Kim Petras and More
Jason St. Amand READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Welcome to EDGE's New Music Friday, our guide to the best singles and albums released every week! We break down the brand new album from Hasley (produced by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), two new songs from Kacey Musgraves, an album from the Scottish synth pop band CHVRCHES and new singles from Kim Petras and others!
Halsey - "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power"
Halsey returns with her fourth album nearly a year-and-a-half since releasing "Manic." "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power" is the pop star's most ambitious album yet; a cohesive 13-track concept album (that comes with an accompanying IMAX film) tackling themes of feminism, the patriarch, misogyny, pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood. Produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (the Nine Inch Nails duo behind Oscar and Grammy Award winning soundtracks "The Social Network" and more), her album ventures into genres other pop stars rarely explore, like grunge, industrial and rock. Halsey's latest effort is an accomplished piece of music that puts the singer in a totally new direction. It's a big risk with a big reward.
Kacey Musgraves - "Star-Crossed," "Justified"
After winning the Grammy for Album of the Year for "Golden Hour" in 2018, Kacey Musgraves is finally back with the announcement of a new album and two brand new tracks. The country superstar has shared the album's title track "Star-Crossed" and "Justified." The former is an ethereal album opener where Musgraves "sets the scene," as she sings over Spanish guitar. The latter track is more of a traditional song, a pleasant bop that finds Musgraves in her country pop roots.
CHVRCHES - "Screen Violence"
The Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES deliver their fourth album "Screen Violence" this week, an album made during the pandemic that might be the band's most raw and emotional album to date. Lead singer Lauren Mayberry said the lead single "He Said She Said" was inspired sexism she encountered and that the album is about the violence we witness through all different screens; TV, phones, computers. The album also comes with the song "How Not to Drown" featuring vocals from The Cure's Robert Smith.
Kim Petras - "Future Starts Now"
Pop singer Kim Petras shares her latest single "Future Now," a pulsating disco-y Giorgio Moroder inspired bop that finds the singer having a full fledged late 70s glittery moment.
Rina Sawayama - "Enter Sandman"
Acclaimed out musician Rina Sawayama shares her cover of Metallica's iconic "Enter Sandman" today. Fans of Sawayama will know this isn't unfamiliar territory for the British singer as much of her 2020 album "Sawayama" found her screaming lyrics around hard rock guitars. Of course, her cover perfectly fits in her discography as she's able to bring her own unique spin to the classic song.
Caribou - "You Can Do It"
Canadian musician Dan Snaith shares his new single under his Caribou moniker. "You Can Do It" is an exciting dancefloor-ready house banger that's the perfect song to party to during the summer wind down.
