Watch: Buttigieg Reflects on Being Gay, Coming Out in 'Mayor Pete' Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video documentary "Mayor Pete" has dropped, and it features a moment in which America's first credible out gay presidential candidate reflects on being gay and embracing authenticity.

"When I talked about coming out," Buttigieg says in the trailer, which dropped on Oct. 18, "that was for everybody who's tried to figure out how to be who they are."

Buttigieg goes on to address other issues around identity and authenticity, saying that in a political campaign, "The challenge, of course, is how do you master the game without it changing you."

The doc includes other moments of fearless authenticity, from one-liners at public events ("This is the only chance you'll ever get to vote for a Maltese-American, left-handed, Episcopalian gay war veteran mayor millennial!") to quiet gestures of affection shared with husband Chasten Buttigieg (as when Chasten offers a supportive hug while Pete works at his desk, or when the two, seated at a restaurant table, playfully entwine their pinky fingers).

Buttigieg had already been elected mayor of South Bend, Indiana, when he decided to come out publicly. When he did, it didn't mark the end of his political career – far from it; voters in South Bend re-elected him by an overwhelming margin.

When Buttigieg decided to throw his hat into the 2020 presidential race, documentary film director Jesse Moss ("Boys State") was along for much of the campaign, filming Pete and Chasten's public moments as well as the campaign's behind-the-scenes ups and downs.
