Who Is The Out Hollywood Mogul on Forbes Highest Paid Entertainers List?
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Forbes Magazine posted their Highest-Paid Entertainers list and amongst the top 25, only one is out. And it's not Elton John, Ryan Murphy, or Ellen (she had a bad year.) It's Hollywood mogul Greg Berlanti, who placed 20th, making $75 million last year.
"The showrunner is known for his bevy of CW hits like'Riverdale,' but most of his income comes from a six-year production deal with Netflix for shows like the psychological thriller'You,' " writes Forbes.
Berlanti married ex-LA Galaxysoccer playerRobbie Rogers in 2017. They have two children born viasurrogacy, a son in 2016 and a daughter in 2019.
He is also responsible for CW's "Arrowverse" ("The Arrow," "The Flash," and "Legends of Tomorrow"), as well as "Supergirl," "Titans," and "Superman & Lois." He made his film directing debut with "The Broken Hearts Club: A Gay Romantic Comedy" in 2000. In 2008, he directed "Love, Simon," the gay teen romantic comedy that spawned a television series.
It was announced last week that "The Producers Guild of America will honor producer, writer, and directorGreg Berlanti with its Norman LearAchievement Award during the Producers Guild Awards next month in Los Angeles."
TheNorman Lear Award, named after the prolific Emmy-winning producer of "All in the Family," celebrates producers who have made asignificant impact on the art and craft of television. Previous honoreesinclude Marta Kauffman, Amy Sherman-Palladino, RyanMurphy, Shonda Rhimes, Dick Wolf, Jerry Bruckheimer, Lorne Michaels,Aaron Spelling, Steven Bochco, David E. Kelley, and Lear himself.
"From beloved series like'Dawson's Creek,' must-watch streaming shows like'The Flight Attendant'and action-packed DC hits like'The Flash'and'Doom Patrol,' Greg has produced some of themost obsession-worthy series in the history of television," saidProducers Guild of America presidents, Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher in a statement. "Greg's ability to capture the world's attention withcaptivating characters and innovativestorylines, generation aftergeneration, is unparalleled. We're thrilled to honor Greg with theNorman Lear Award."
"I'mincredibly honored to receive this award from everyone at the PGA,especially given it's named after Norman Lear: The kindest, warmest andwisest legend I've ever had the good fortuneof calling a friend.I'm so grateful to everyone at the Producers Guildand all of my coworkers who have helped make a moment like thispossible," said Berlanti.
But his earnings are just a fraction of film director/producer Peter Jackson's take, who led the Forbes list at $580 million. Coming next is 2. Bruce Springsteen ($435 million); 3. Jay-Z ($340 million); 4. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ($270 million); 5. Kanye West ($235 million); 6. Trey Parker and Matt Stone ($210 million); 7. Paul Simon ($200 million); 8. Tyler Perry ($165 million); 9. Ryan Tedder ($160 million); 10. Bob Dylan ($130 million).
The remaining 15 are: 11. Red Hot Chili Peppers ($116 million); 12. Reese Witherspoon ($115 million); (the highest paid woman); 13. Chuck Lorre ($100 million); 14. Sean "Diddy" Combs ($90 million); 15. Dick Wolf ($86 million); 16. Howard Stern ($85 million); 17. Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane ($82 million); 18. Shonda Rhimes ($81 million); 19. Neil Young ($80 million); Berlanti ($75 million); 21. Lindsey Buckingham ($73 million); 22. Mötley Crüe ($72 million); 23. The Beach Boys ($64 million); 24. Blake Shelton ($55 million); and 25. Taylor Swift ($52 million).
The Daily Mail points out that Jackson made his fortune from the sale of his visual effects business, not movie making. And the enormous earnings of such music stars as Springsteen, Jay-Z, and Kanye West came more from other business ventures or sales of their catalogues than from recordings or touring.
"Reese Witherspoon was the highest paid female entertainer. She earned $115 million after selling a stake in her production company Hello Sunshine and making a reported $20 million on Apple's 'The Morning Show,' " reports the Daily Mail.
"South Park" had a very good year; that, and a six-year, $900 million deal with Paramount+ had Trey Parker and Matt Stone placing 6th with $210 million. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is the highest paid actor, placing 4th with $270 million, and Tyler Perry placed 8th with $165 million.
