Jane Lynch Doubts Her 'Glee' Character Would Be on TV Today

Dealing with homophobia, racism, and other concerns, "Glee" was groundbreaking in its day. But now? Not so much, Jane Lynch says, citing the show's problematic elements.
The out actor portrayed Sue Sylvester, a cheerleading coach at the high school where the musical comedy series was set. The character was "deliberately awful," Lynch told UK newspaper The Guardian in a recent interview, but even so, she said, it's doubtful that if "Glee" were airing today Sue Sylvester –and perhaps the show itself –could avoid getting canceled... not by the network, but by viewers.
Sylvester "would make racist and sizeist comments about the Students," Screen Rant recalled. Lynch was thinking about just this with her remarks, mulling whether "she would be able to get away with the things she said – racist, fat-shaming – were 'Glee' still running.
"I think there would have been people out there who would have wanted to cancel Sue Sylvester," Lynch went on to say, adding: "I don't know that we could have done that show today".
"Lynch is far from the first person to think Glee hasn't aged well, with many critics citing the show's veneer of comedy as a way to excuse bad behavior," Screen Rant noted.
In her interview with The Guardian, Lynch acknowledged the need to call out certain sorts of conduct, but suggested that cancel culture can go too far.
"There's kind of a rabid anonymous group of folks who can really change somebody's life; they could take away their career," the actor said.
"This preoccupation with going 'Aha!', that's a drag," Lynch added. "Hopefully we'll get over that soon."
Before starring on "Glee," Lynch had a recurring role on the lesbian drama "The L Word." Once "Glee" finished its six-season run on Fox, ending in 2015, Lynch went on to a number of other projects, including the hit Amazon Prime comedy "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," which has just begun its fourth season.
