'New Hero of French Queer Cinema' Felix Maritaud Takes a Snap with Pierre et Gilles
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Félix Maritaud has been called "the new hero of French queer cinema". This week the actor collaborated with iconic photographers Pierre et Gilles for a queer pic.
When Félix Maritaud made his film debut in "BPM (Beats Per Minute)" in 2017, the French LGBTQ magazine Têtudubbed him "the new hero of French queer cinema". And the Irish Times wrote: "You don't have to have attended last year's Cannes film festival to know that Félix Maritaud is the hottest young actor on the planet, but it would not have hurt."
He told the Irish Times: "I'm happy to hear that I'm part of queer cinema. My culture is queer. I'm a product of queer culture. Being queer is my life. I make movies that speak to queer people from queer people. But I don't think of the movies I've made as queer cinema."
Since "BPM," he's starred in Gaspar Noé's "Lux Æterna," which premiered at Cannes in 2019 but is getting a U.S. release next month.
In the 51-minute film, Maritaud joins Charlotte Gainsbourg and Béatrice Dalle, who play versions of themselves making a movie about witchcraft that goes haywire during production. He plays a producer who is losing patience with a new director.
Maritaud also appears in his home country next month in "Tom," a new film by author/filmmaker Fabienne Berthaud. In the film, he plays a recently released prisoner who disrupts the lives of a young mother and her 11-year-old son living in a trailer.
This past weekend Maritaud collaborated with another Gallic legend – artists Pierre et Gilles, the emblematic French duo of queer photography.
"Immense honor to present to you my first photo with Pierre and Gilles: 'Le Tramp Céleste'," writes the actor below the image."Infinite love for you both."The two photographers also took care to share their work via their ownrespective Instagrampages, adorning the caption with festive emojis and therefore signaling a most fruitful collaboration.
