Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Netflix has become well-known for its comedy specials, but also the fact that they don't just choose the popular, well-known comedians, but shine light on lesser-known comics. So, it's not a surprise that they've created their first festival in Los Angeles called "Netflix is a Joke."
For more information, visit the event's website.
The event, which runs through May 8 in Los Angeles, features such popular personalities as Wanda Sykes, Seth Rogen, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Aziz Anasari, and Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, there are a plethora of LGBTQ+ comics gracing stages in Los Angeles through the length of the Festival which runsthrough May 8th.
Sort of "The New Wave of Queer Comics," Netflix has given spotlight to some familiar names as well as up-and-coming folx from all aspects of the queer spectrum.
The most famous of those performing are Wanda Sykes, who takes the stage at the Orpheum theatre, Fortune Feimster performing at the Ace Hotel, "Queer Eye's" Jonathan Van Ness, and the legendary Margaret Cho.
But while all of these comedians have nights all to themselves, the LGBTQ+ cavalcade even gets their own star-studded evening, featuring more than two dozen comics from around the U.S. The "taped live" event is called "Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration," and will be hosted by actor/comedian/writer Billy Eichner and held at the Greek Theater in Hollywoodon Saturday May 7that 7:30pm.
Headliners for the night include Eddie Izzard, Margaret Cho, Sandra Bernhard, Tig Notaro, and Wanda Sykes. But there are at least a dozen more comedians that will take the stage as well, including "Drag Race"'s Bob the Drag Queen and Fortune Feimster, "Feel Good" star Mae Martin, Joel Kim ("I knew I was gay before I knew I was Asian") Booster, Chicago painter/opera singer/podcast host Matteo Lane, "Adam Ruins Everything" and "Good Trouble" actor River Butcher, drag icon Trixie Mattel, and Viet Trans comic Robin Tran.
So, whether you come to support your favorite comics or take a peek at someone new, there is plenty for the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate and enjoy.
