As The Criterion Collection continues to expand its offerings of 4K Ultra HD home releases, it's always interesting to see which films will be chosen. Some 4K releases include upgrades of past Criterion titles, whereas others are entering the collection for the first time. This month, an interesting addition to Criterion can be found in Bong Joon Ho's 2017 eco-drama "Okja." Following a young girl named Mija and her "superpig" named Okja, the fantasy-laced film remains grounded in the reality of corporate evil and empathy-enriched friendship, combining to become something fascinatingly complex.
Within Bong Joon Ho's eclectic filmography, which includes his international hit and multi-Oscar winner "Parasite" (also on Criterion), "Okja" is considered by many to be one of the filmmaker's lesser works. On the other hand, there's another side of the debate that will argue it's one of his best. As such, it makes a worthy addition to Criterion as its unique premise and attention-grabbing special effects transcend this Miyazaki-esque yarn into noteworthy territory.
With this 4K release, you'll find a combo pack that also includes a Blu-ray of the film. The 4K, presented in Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range), is remarkably rich in its visual detail, highlighting the special effects more and more with each scene. Thrilling sequences and set pieces make the 4K upgrade totally worth it, as this is arguably one of Bong Joon Ho's most aesthetically interesting films.
Bonus features on the 4K/Blu-ray combo release include:
The Criterion Collection 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo pack release of "Okja" is now available for the suggested retail price of $39.96
