Pop Star Allie X Responds to Allegations She Left Dog in Hot Car
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Pop star Allie X has contributed to Troye Sivan's work and provided music and voiceovers for "Rupaul's Drag Race All Stars." But the Canadian singer-songwriter found herself refuting allegations posted online by gay recording artist Simon Curtis, who called her a "disgusting Karen" and alleged that she had left her dog in a hot car for over 20 minutes, endangering its life.
Curtis posted a video of Allie X driving away, captioning the post with "anyone know this disgusting Karen?"
"Found a golden lab panting and pouring saliva in a locked car in the bald ass open sun with closed windows and no AC in 95 degree heat," the post continued, before adding, "we called security, the police, and stood with the car for almost 20 minutes..."
In followup posts Curtis said that "A larger breed dog can DIE in those conditions within six minutes," and called Allie X a "foul fucking ghoul." Curtis claimed that she had "laughed" at his concerns, and said the pop star "ROLLED HER EYES and sneered when she came out to find a small crowd around her car" before referring to Allie X's male companion as a "dumb Chad..."
In response, Allie X sent out her own tweet, rebutting Curtis' claims point by point, starting with an explanation that she left her dog (named Koji) in the car because the dog is "extremely socially anxious," but that she had checked the thermostat before leaving her to ensure the car would remain a "safe and cool environment for a few minutes while I ran in and out."
Allie X contradicted claims that a crowd was standing around her car for 20 minutes or more. "Based on my checkout receipt, I was gone for exactly 11 minutes, and when I returned the car was cool inside. Koji was completely okay."
As for her laughing, the pop star said that was a reaction due to her being "frightened and uncomfortable of these two men outside my car."
"These details matter," Allie X added, saying she had "received hundreds of attacks and death threats made more terrifying by the fact that this person posted my face and my identifiable information with the sole intent to dox me."
Allie X admitted to leaving the car windows rolled up with Koji inside "because I had the AC blasting at 60 F right before I got out" and she thought the car would retain the cool air better that way – although she added that she hadn't known about California state law forbidding a dog being left in a car without a window being rolled down.
"This situation has educated me," Allie X posted, "and I would like to genuinely apologize."
She then addressed Curtis.
"To the person who thought it necessary to do all this, thank you for your concern," Allie X posted, before adding, "perhaps a conversation would have been more productive?"
She also called out Curtis for allegedly "Bullying me, making fun of the way I look," and questioning his use of the occasion "as an opportunity to promote your music?"
"The last part of her message appeared to reference Curtis' follow-up tweets, in which he called her a 'vile person and an unapologetic animal abuser,' and prompted his followers to 'stream my discography if you want clear skin and don't abuse dogs,'" Entertainment Weekly noted.
The comments left after the posts were divided, ranging from people wondering why Curtis had not broken the car windows to people declaring Allie X an "abuser," while others questioned Curtis' version of events, noting that the dog was not visible in the video as Allie X drove away.
Many sought to turn the moment into a teachable moment, sharing an infographic about dogs and hot cars.
Curtis stood by his claims, telling EW that there were "multiple witnesses, including my partner, store employees, parking attendants, and security, who can attest to this," and adding that "in what has now become a deeply traumatic experience, I have been labeled a 'bully,' an accusation rooted in the homophobic stereotype of the deviant gay male, all because I cared about animal welfare."
