Out 'Bridgerton' Star Jonathan Bailey to Play Fiyero in 'Wicked' Movies

Director Jon M. Chu confirmed on social media that out "Bridgerton" star Jonathan Bailey will play the love interest of the Wicked Witch of the West in upcoming "Wicked" films.

Variety first reported that Bailey is in negotiations for the role over a two-part feature film adaptation, which will be headlined by Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The two films will respectively hit theaters during Christmas time in 2024 and 2025.

But shortly after the report, Chu quoted Variety's report on Twitter, adding that Bailey is "perfect" and confirming him in the role.

If you haven't seen the critically acclaimed Broadway show, "Wicked" is a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" that tells the story of how Glinda became the Good Witch and Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West.

Bailey's Fiyero is the love interest of the West Witch and a major driver of changes in her character.

"We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one 'Wicked' movie but two!" Chu wrote in a statement announcing the two-part planned films. "With more space, we can tell the story of 'Wicked' as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters."

The Broadway "Wicked" screenplay is being adopted for film by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, who penned the music and lyrics for the stage show.

"The musical opened on Broadway in 2003 and continues to run, earning more than $1 billion on Broadway," Variety reports. "The show is second only to 'The Lion King' as the highest grossing Broadway musical of all time."

Bailey has been very busy. He was the lead in the West End production of the "Cock." And just as it was announced that he would play Matt Bomer's love interest in the Showtime limited series "Fellow Travelers," pictures appeared of the two frolicking on the beach while filming a scene.

Bailey is on his way.
