JoJo Siwa has opened up about which cultural bread crumbs led her toward the discovery that she's gay, and what experience clinched the realization.
ET Online reported that Siwa, 18, had her first glimmers of awareness around being gay in 2015, when she was obsessing over Demi Lovato's "Cool for the Summer," a song about a relationship between two women.
In a TikTok posted as part of a "One Thing About Me" challenge, the entertainer made her disclosures in a rap captioned "My gay awakening story time." Siwa revealed that she "really, really liked it and listened to it all the time," and while "I did not know what it meant back then... now that I'm much older and I understand, I know what it means."
Siwa went on: "Then a few years later, Jenna Dewan went on 'Lip Sync Battle.' She did a really great 'Magic Mike' number. I pretty much watched it every day. Little me didn't actually know she was gay! Until..."
Until?
"A couple years later a man was my first date, and he wanted to have sex with me and I... did not want to, never wanted to, grossed out by the thought of it," Siwa explained.
"Immediately knew men are not my thing. Women are my gig."
"Gotta go!" the teen celeb, herself now a gay icon, signed off.
ET Online recalled that Siwa related the same sequence of events to Lovato last year during an appearance on Lovato's podcast.
"I think I realized that my very first gay awakening was Jenna Dewan's performance on 'Lip Sync Battle,'" ET Online recalled Siwa telling Lovato, before adding: "But do you remember your dancer, her name is JoJo Gomez, and you did 'Cool for the Summer' together? I remember seeing that and just being a little too interested."
